Refuse Recycling Driver – LGV Class 2

WasteRecruit is supporting a Local Authority in the West Midlands with the recruitment of LGV Class 2 drivers for its frontline refuse and recycling collection service.

This is a visible and important public-service role. You will drive refuse and recycling vehicles, help deliver safe and reliable collection rounds and represent the council professionally when working around residents, businesses and other road users.

The role

Working as part of a collection crew, you will follow planned routes and ensure that household waste, recycling and Trade Waste are collected and disposed of in line with service objectives. The work also includes street-sweeping operations when required.

This is a hands-on driver role rather than a cab-only position. You must be willing and physically able to push wheeled bins and lift or move containers and bulky household-waste items safely.

Responsibilities

  • Drive Category C waste collection vehicles safely, legally and in line with the confirmed fleet tonnage.
  • Complete pre-use, post-use and handover checks and report defects accurately.
  • Follow planned collection routes using electronic in-cab systems and paper maps.
  • Collect household waste, recycling and Trade Waste and use the correct disposal locations and procedures.
  • Work closely with loaders and other crew members, including safe reversing and manoeuvring activity.
  • Assist with wheeled bins, containers and bulky household-waste items and work as a loader when required.
  • Support street-sweeping operations when required and once appropriately trained.
  • Comply with Road Traffic Regulations, health and safety procedures, manual-handling controls and disposal-site instructions.
  • Complete operational paperwork and in-cab records and report collection, access or safety issues promptly.
  • Provide a professional and respectful service to residents, businesses and colleagues.

Requirements

  • A valid Category C large goods vehicle licence suitable for the confirmed refuse collection fleet.
  • A current Driver CPC / Driver Qualification Card and tachograph card.
  • The ability to pass a driver medical examination and any required practical assessment.
  • A sound understanding of Road Traffic Regulations, daily vehicle checks, defect reporting, health and safety and manual handling.
  • The ability to read electronic and paper maps and follow existing planned routes.
  • The physical ability to push wheeled bins and lift or move containers and bulky household-waste items safely.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision and contribute effectively as part of a crew.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours, Bank Holidays and additional statutory days when required.
  • A dependable, safety-conscious and public-service-focused approach.

What you will receive

  • Salary of £34,110–£36,862, including a £1,648 market supplement and vehicle-check payment; pay award pending.
  • 35 days’ leave, including eight Bank Holidays and three extra days normally applied at Christmas.
  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Annual leave purchase scheme and structured induction programme.
  • Learning and development opportunities, including Future Leaders programmes.
  • Payment of one approved professional subscription where applicable.
  • Family-friendly policies, independent health and wellbeing support and generous compassionate leave.
  • Retail discounts, Cycle to Work scheme and other employee benefits.
  • The stability and purpose of a permanent frontline role serving the Rugby community.

Application

Please send WasteRecruit your current CV together with a short summary of your relevant Class 2 experience, the refuse or other rigid vehicles you have driven, your current location, notice period and salary expectations.

Please also confirm your Category C entitlement date, Driver CPC / DQC and tachograph-card expiry dates, live penalty points or endorsements and whether you are comfortable with the physical driver-loader duties and required work pattern.

All applications will be handled in confidence. WasteRecruit is acting as an employment agency in relation to this permanent vacancy. Applications are welcomed from all suitably qualified candidates.
